Brian De laval Willis was born on the 17th of May, 1888. He was the son of Archdeacon W H De C Willis of Cambridge. After schooling in Cambridge he attended St Johns College in Auckland in 1904 and 1905 and then Kings College. He was active in the sports teams of both. Brian enlisted in the infantry battalion of the Auckland Regiment. He left New Zealand as part of the Main Body of troops leaving from Wellington on the 16th of October, for Suez, Egypt. He left on either HMNZT 8, or 12 on the SS.Waimana. He went with the regiment to Gallipoli and was wounded in the chest on the 5th of May, 1915 when embarking from Anzac Cove. He was conveyed to hospital in Alexandria, where he died on the 12th of May, 1915, aged 26. His name is recorded on the memorial panel A138.
