James (Jim) Alfred McNeish served both in the South African war and in the Great War. He was married to Louie (nee Norgrove), and lived in Wilson Street. His brother George Francis also served in the Great War. George Francis is also commemorated as an old boy on this web site and died in 1915 in Gallipoli. James served as a driver and left for the war in October 1914. By 1916 he was serving in France and was admitted to hospital twice during the month. The first time for having suffered head injuries and concussion, and the second for a leg wound. Serving at the front clearly took its toll and James returned to New Zealand in January 1918 and was discharged from the army as no longer fit for service. Like many physically weakened returned soldiers he succumbed in the world wide Influenza epidemic and died in November 1918. He is buried in Karori cemetery.
