George (Jack to his friends)Francis McNeish was the son of James and Jane McNeish of Duke Street in Cambridge. He enlisted on the 13th of August, 1914 in Cambridge, in the first flush of patriotic enthusiasm. He joined the Auckland Mounted Rifles and rose to the rank of sergeant and found his way to Gallipoli via Egypt. Like many of the troops who landed in Gallipoli, he succumbed to illness in the form of diarrhoea and was taken to Mudros on the 18th of July, 1915. Unfortunately while here he caught bronchitis on the 21st July. Later he was returned to Gallipoli and he was killed in action on the 8th of August, 1915. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Chunuk Bair Memorial to the missing.
